TYLER POINT
Historic Rhode Island Renovation
Built in 1850 and set on two waterfront acres, Tyler Point is home to Alex Interiors founder and principal Alex Crecelius — and became an opportunity to push ideas a little further while preserving what made the house worth falling for in the first place.
Rather than erase nearly two centuries of character, the renovation leaned into the home's original architecture: substantial millwork, plaster details, old doors, fireplaces, distinctive windows and a dramatic turned staircase were preserved and given new relevance against a much more unexpected interior.
The property's history extends beyond the architecture. Its English-style gardens were cultivated by the previous owner, an artist whose creative imprint still feels present throughout the house. Several of her antiques were intentionally kept and reworked into the new design — an old dining table now surrounded by sculptural black velvet chairs, antique chests placed among contemporary lighting, art and furniture. Instead of treating those pieces as relics, they became part of a new layer of the home's story.
The result isn't a preservation project or a reinvention of the past. It's a house allowed to keep evolving — collected over generations, with the old and new making each other more interesting.
